Are you tired of all the rain? I know I am, but it looks like we just might have a beautiful weekend ahead. And just in time, we have received more truckloads of excellent trees and shrubs and we are pricing them at 25% off.
Last week, I bought a redbud tree and brought it home for my husband to plant. I used to say, I point and he plants. So didn’t happen this time. And worse still, I forgot my camera to document that I was the one with the shovel. Our grandson was concerned when he looked over the fence and he saw me, his very own Oma, digging the hole for the redbud. And boy was that a BIG hole. The first thing my husband said when I got home with my tree was: “Could you have gotten one any bigger?” I think he was being a little sarcastic, but I cheerfully replied that it was the biggest one we had and that I would help…sigh, he took me seriously. So there we were, after a nice rain, digging the BIG HOLE because you must dig bigger than the actual plant and make sure you have amended the soil so your plant gets the best start. Despite the hard work, I know that in the years to come, I will treasure this tree maybe a little more than all the others since it will be my last Behnke Tree that was #bornatbehnkes.
Many people have been asking when our last day will be and we have finally decided. On the evening of Saturday, June 15, 2019 we will close our gates for good. Saying that makes me just pause. So much has happened these last 5 or 6 weeks. So many stories and goodbye wishes. The only thing I can say is: Thank You from all of us at Behnke’s for showing us how much you really care about us. Not just about the plants, but also about the people who make us the unique garden center that you’ve enjoyed visiting year after year.
