Summer Fun With Butterflies

What a few weeks this has been out in the backyard and on social media. For the last few weeks, I have been watching all the bees and butterflies showing up everywhere in our yard. And then when I get on Facebook, everyone is sharing photos of their butterflies.

Alice, who many of you might remember working in our sunny annual department every Spring loves to share photos of her beautiful gardens, and she lately has been fascinating us with videos and pictures of all of her butterflies hatching.

It typically takes them an hour or two to dry off and stretch their wings. After the wings harden, they are ready to fly.

Alice and her daughter were kind enough to share this photo of her granddaughter waiting for the butterfly to take flight. Do you see it down on the lower left side of the image?

How lucky is she to learn about nature and its beauty right outside her back yard with her grandmother? (Reason #1 why I love facebook: I get to watch all my friend’s children and grandchildren grow up. Plus see all the fantastic things they do like sitting in a garden waiting for a butterfly to fly. )

I have been on the hunt to find our little friends to watch but somehow keep missing them. I find them after they have already hatched and are flying all over the garden. Seems like they love our zinnias so I know I will be sure to plant even more next year.

While butterfly watching, I have also been enjoying watching our bees. Getting close up shots of them just dripping with pollen makes me very happy. It really does not take much these days.

I hope you have time to go out and see what is flying around your garden. Take the little ones and your camera and just enjoy the time.
