Wishing Mothers Everywhere A Very Happy Mother’s Day

My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things
that gave my life it’s start.
She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem…
And when the winds and rain came,
she protected me enough-
But not too much because she knew
I’d need to stand up strong and tough.
Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong-
Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.
I am my Mother’s garden.
I am her legacy-
And I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me

  1. Will certainly miss your blogs once the nursery closes; unless you’ll carry on perhaps?

  2. I am glad you have enjoyed them. I am planning on keeping our web site and blog going. The first thing I will do after a little time off is let everyone know where our wonderful employees end up if they stay in the business. Then I am working on putting something together to write about all the other fabulous independent garden centers in our areas. Stay tune and thanks for being a loyal friend of Behnkes

  3. My grandfather Paul C. Stanard was a gardener/grounds keeper at the old Walter Reed Hospital in Upper N.W. Washington,DC. As a child he would take me to work and I would go into the greenhouse which was hot and learned a great deal about plants. This is why I think i have a green thumb today. When I moved to Upper Marlboro,Md. ( the Kettering community back in 2004 i discovered a Behnke’s there on Route 193 Watkins Park Drive. I had been going to the store in Beltsville. I was excited to have a nursery that close and bought items from there. To my dismay the store soon closed. Now i have been going to your store again in Beltsville for many years before i moved to the Kettering neighborhood and after. It saddens me to see such an icon go away. In the last few months i have been buying a lot of rose bushes and plan to come a few more times. You will be missed.
