After 36 years in the same home, I finally had a landscape project that was beyond my skill set to accomplish. Gardens evolve over the years, and my wooded quarter acre has suffered loss of trees.
Before Behnke’s closed our garden center last summer, we were recommending ZabreneScapes to you for all your landscaping needs. The owners, Pete Exis and Walter Ruano, are two very hands-on landscape designers that also love plants and people. What could be better?
Many a day we would see Pete at the garden center with his big smile picking out the perfect (we told him they were all perfect) plants for his customer or even shopping with his customers. Pete loved to stop in and chat while bringing us surprises like sandwiches during the holidays, or snacks, well, anytime. I sometimes felt I should just give him a Behnke shirt since if he had time, he would be out with our customers giving advice or even directions to where things were. Nobody is a stranger to Pete.
I wanted to take the time to introduce them to you here on Beyond Behnke’s. So many of you have written to me asking what to do for your yards. Now with the virus that is affecting all our lives, you are worried about your garden. ZabreneScapes has a plan in place to help you and stay safe at the same time. They are using the best practices recommended in working on your gardens while keeping their employees safe. They are more than happy to talk to you over the phone to set up different ways to give you the information you will want and need to decide on what you want to be done in your yard.
Do you have dreams of a new patio or deck? What about a pathway into your garden? Have you been wanting a perennial garden, but just do not know where to start? Maybe you just need some help getting started but you really want to do most of it yourself. These two guys are here to make your garden dreams come true. But it is more than just creating something new. They also do your basic yard clean up and mulching while giving their expert advice on your plants. You can even get Pete talking about his orchids and houseplants while you’re at it. Their passion shines through.
I am excited because Pete has invited me to visit some of their ongoing projects. Once I see them, I will share some photographs with you in a future blog. What I am really interested in seeing is some of the patios and decks they are creating for folks. My husband built a wooden deck about 32 years ago off our dining room. As the years went by, it started to look old, and nails would pop up. I would be out there with my hammer banging them back in, so we finally tore the whole thing down.
Now it has been over 12 years since I have walked out my back door. I am ready for something and can’t wait to see what Walter and Pete have done at other homes. I personally see a beautiful stone patio with a wide stairway to it from my dining room. Maybe a fireplace or a fire pit? Some stone-ringed flower beds with a stone wall around the garden.
As a little girl, I loved the stone walls my grandparents, Albert and Rose Behnke, had around their gardens in Burtonsville. My husband is not so sure since there is a pretty big slope. And he does not see my vision as I do. So, I will be picking Pete’s and Walters’s brains to see if we could come up with something my husband will agree to. That is very important when talking to a company like ZebreneScapes. Both you and your spouse or partner need to be on the same page. Have a budget in mind and be honest with what you are expecting. Maybe have photos to show what you’re thinking and have an open mind.
ZabreneScapes has been in business since 2015, bringing with them so much expertise. Walter has many years of design, horticulture, and studied landscape architecture at the University of Maryland. At the same time, Pete’s love of plants and color comes through in all their plans. He loves to include texture and other elements in your dreams.
I hope if you are considering having some landscaping done or just want your yard cleaned up, you get in touch with these fun-loving guys. You can reach them by calling 301-503-1528.
